Slice of Life stories focused on an apparently random and mundane period in the lives of the main characters. Because there is no primary narrative to guide the story to a predetermined endpoint, Slice of Life stories usually lack overall conflict and resolve. While life and Slice of Life are not without conflict, conflict emerges and evaporates seemingly at random, with no explicit storyline to impose it.

Tanaka-kun is Always Listless

Tanaka, a high school student, considers being listless to be a way of life. Tanaka, who is known for his inattention and tendency to fall asleep wherever, prays that each day would be as uneventful as the last, attempting to maintain his lazy lifestyle in any way he can by avoiding situations that force him to exert himself. Along with his faithful buddy Oota, who assists him with activities, he is unable to complete, the sluggish adolescent is continuously confronted with situations that prevent him from obtaining the quiet and tranquil days he craves.

A simple, sweet, and refreshing comedy, with a straightforward and simple plot line. It is a series that follows Tanaka’s listless adventures (or should I say non-adventures, really, I mean Tanaka was like: “I don’t want to be the main character of my own life.”) with his amusing ensemble of adorable and lively friends.

There are no twists and turns with dramatic climaxes or anticipating cliffhangers that make you pull out all your hair. None of those. It is a pretty calm anime …

New Game!

Aoba Suzukaze has been a fan of the Fairies Story game series since he was a child, particularly the character designs. So it’s no surprise that after she graduates from high school, she applies for a job at Eagle Jump, the business that created her favorite video game. On her first day, she is ecstatic to find that she will be working on a new edition of the series: Fairies Story 3—especially under the direction of Kou Yagami, the lead character designer.

People with a similar interest in games work in their department. Yun Iijima, who specializes in monster design; the shy Hifumi Takimoto, who prefers instant messaging to communicate; Hajime Shinoda, an animation team member with an impressive figurine collection; Rin Tooyama, the orderly art director; Shizuku Hazuki, the game director who brings her cat to work; and Umiko Ahagon, the short-tempered head programmer.

New Game! follows Aoba and the others on their adventure through the ups and downs of game making, from making the perfect character design to fixing all the errors that will inevitably accumulate in the process.

Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun

Chiyo Sakura is a joyful high school girl who is head over heels in love with the naive Umetarou Nozaki. When Chiyo confesses to her lover Nozaki, he presents her with an unknown autograph, much to her surprise. As it turns out, the stoic adolescent is a well-known shoujo mangaka who goes by the pen name Sakiko Yumeno! Chiyo becomes one of Nozaki’s manga assistants as a result of a series of misunderstandings.

Throughout the hilarity, she befriends many of her oddball classmates, including her seemingly shameless fellow assistant, Mikoto Mikoshiba, and the “Prince of the School,” Yuu Kashima. Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun follows Chiyo as she works to assist Nozaki with his manga, hoping that he will finally recognize her affection.

If you’re looking for an anime with endless hilarity and gags that runs off love and romance, this is what you’re looking for. Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun thrives off misjudgments and its characters.

ReLIFE

After being dismissed as a hopeless loser by those around him, 27-year-old Arata Kaizaki bounces around from one job to the next. His humdrum existence changes dramatically when he meets Ryou Yoake, a member of the ReLife Research Institute, who gives Arata the chance to transform his life for the better by taking a strange pill. Arata accepts it without hesitation and awakens the next day to see that his look has reverted to that of a 17-year-old.

Arata quickly discovers that he is now the subject of a one-of-a-kind experiment and must attend high school as a transfer student for one year. Though he initially feels it will be a breeze because of his superior life experience, Arata is proven severely incorrect on his first day: he flunks all of his examinations, is completely out of shape, and is unable to keep up with the new school policies that have emerged in the last ten years. Furthermore, Ryou has been assigned to observe him, much to Arata’s chagrin. ReLIFE chronicles Arata’s attempt to adjust to his frenetic new lifestyle and avoid making the same mistakes he made in the past, all while learning more about his classmates.

I’d recommend reading the manga after you’ve watched the anime ’cause the anime skipped a lot of stuff.

Himouto! Umaru-chan

People are not always what they appear to be, as Umaru Doma, the perfect high school girl—is until she comes home! The real fun begins when the front door is shut. When she puts on her hamster hoodie, she goes from a sophisticated, overachieving student to a slacker, junk food-eating otaku, delegating all housekeeping to her responsible older brother Taihei. Umaru knows how to have fun, whether she’s hanging out with her friends Nana Ebina and Kirie Motoba or competing with her self-proclaimed “rival” Sylphinford Tachibana.

Himouto! Umaru-chan is a cute story that follows Umaru and Taihei’s daily adventures as they take care of—and put up with—each other to the best of their abilities, as well as the unbreakable links between friends and siblings.

Hyouka

Houtarou Oreki, a high school freshman, has only one goal: to live a grey existence while conserving as much energy as possible. His calm days are cut short when his older sister, Tomoe, forces him to save the memberless Classics Club from disbandment.

Oreki’s issue appears to be over when he walks inside the clubroom and sees that his fellow first-year, Eru Chitanda, has already joined. Despite fulfilling his commitment, Oreki becomes captivated by Chitanda’s curious and lively nature, and soon joins the group of his own volition.

Hyouka follows the four members of the Classics Club, including Oreki’s pals Satoshi Fukube and Mayaka Ibara, as they unravel the petty yet intriguing mysteries that pervade their daily lives, inspired by Chitanda’s insatiable curiosity.

Oresuki

Amatsuyu “Jouro” Kisaragi is an ordinary second-year high school student who has two dates on one weekend: one with student council president Sakura “Cosmos” Akino on Saturday and one with his childhood buddy Aoi “Himawari” Hinata on Sunday. Unfortunately for Jouro, both girls profess their love for his best buddy Taiyou “Sun-chan” Ooga, the baseball team’s ace. Accepting each of their pleas for advise and guidance, he is now in charge of assisting the two girls in winning the same guy’s heart.

Unbeknownst to his friends, Jouro’s friendly and obtuse image is all but a ruse designed to cast himself as the clueless protagonist of a textbook romantic comedy. Under his pleasant exterior, he is a schemer who makes the most of this unexpected change of events by devising a new plan: convince Sun-chan to fall for either Cosmos or Himawari and take the other as his prize. However, Jouro’s last-ditch effort is jeopardized by the gloomy, four-eyed Sumireko “Pansy” Sanshokuin, who surprises Jouro not only with her understanding of his secret personality but also with a confession to the true self he has been hiding for all this time.
