The isekai anime subgenre is notorious for its formulaic, predictable conventions, which include self-insert protagonists like Kirito, wish-fulfillment harems, and a token demon king. Even if some anime fans dislike isekai, they may enjoy the best characters in the series and imagine them in another series.
Some isekai anime characters have the right personality, skills, or emotional state to make an excellent romantic comedy protagonist or side character. Those isekai characters are defined more by their emotions and friendships with others than by their magical abilities or otherworldly nature. Many of them are eager to fall in love if they can be isekai’d into a rom com title.
Isekai Characters That Belong In A Rom Com
10. Taiju Oki from Dr. Stone
Dr. Stone is an isekai anime edutainment series set 3,700 years in the future during a new Stone Age. Senku Ishigami, a brilliant scientist, aims to resurrect humanity through the power of science, while his old classmate Taiju Oki handles the manual labor in Senku’s lab.
Taiju is head over heels in love with the lovely Yuzuriha, and he would do anything for her. Taiju could have starred in a rom-com anime series where he’ll gladly carry any physical burden or do any job to impress Yuzuriha if he hadn’t become terrified.
9. Alan Stuart from My Next Life As A Villainess
Although My Next Life as a Villainess contains some rom-com elements, it is primarily a shojo isekai anime series. The protagonist is the reborn Katarina Claes, the villain who strives to make everyone best friends so that the plot of the original game never ends.
No one fell in love, as Katrina intended, but characters like male tsundere Alan Stuart have some promise. Alan would be a great love interest for any lovestruck heroine who wants to see this grouchy, insecure prince’s kinder side in a pure rom-com fantasy title.
8. Kagome Higurashi from InuYasha
The 2000s isekai anime InuYasha did involve several romantic pairings, such as Miroku/Sango and, most of all, Kagome and InuYasha himself. Overall, the InuYasha anime was a lot of things at once, with romance not being the main focus.
Kagome has everything that makes a great rom-com heroine, from her sweet personality to her amusing tsundere ways and her incredible bravery. Kagome is a compelling protagonist with a lot of love to give, whether in feudal Japan or a modern Japanese setting.
7. Demon Lord Claude from I’m The Villainess, So I’m Taming The Final Boss
I’m the Villainess is yet another isekai anime with rom-com elements, but this time the isekai plot takes center stage. This is the story of Aileen d’Autriche, who, like Katarina Claes, was reborn as an otome game villain and must now save herself. That means courting Claude, the kuudere demon king.
Everyone would get along better in an ideal fantasy world, and Aileen wouldn’t have to worry about her fate. A pure rom-com adaptation of I’m the Villainess would allow Claude to shine as a truly wonderful kuudere lover for Aileen, one who fans can root for all the way to the end.
6. Raphtalia from The Rising of the Shield Hero
Raphtalia, a cheerful tanuki girl, met a terrible fate before joining Naofumi’s party in the original storyline of The Rising of the Shield Hero. Raphtalia lost her entire village to raiders and slavers, but her adventure would be different in a rom-com version of Shield Hero.
Raphtalia as a rom-com fantasy heroine would be entertaining to watch as a brave, kind, and helpful person and love interest. Raphtalia would try something more constructive, like running a shop with her friends or her new lover, if she didn’t have to worry about war and monsters.
5. Angelica Redgrave from Trapped in a Dating Sim
Because the in-universe game world is an otome game, Trapped in a Dating Sim is another isekai anime with rom-com elements. However, the protagonist, Leon Bartfort, doesn’t have time for love; he needs to fight hard to survive in a world that wants him to fail.
Ideally, the main characters of Dating Sim would be isekai’d to a typical high school rom-com anime where they could be themselves. Angelica Redgrave is an example of a lovable hero who, while pretentious, has a good heart and a strong will that would make her a good fit for a typical rom-com.
4. Asuna Yuuki from Sword Art Online
Sword Art Online co-lead Asuna Yuuki is similar to Kagome Higurashi. They are both courageous, noble, and strong-willed young ladies who will gladly defend those they care about from powerful villains. They are more than just fighters, though, because these girls prioritize love and friendship.
Asuna Yuuki would bravely fight off punks and bullies in a rom com anime series with cartoonish action sequences that would amaze and delight the male lead. That boy would have a difficult time winning Asuna’s heart, but it would be worth a shot.
3. Subaru Natsuki from Re:Zero
Subaru Natsuki, the underdog isekai protagonist in Re:Zero, used all of his brain cells to negotiate with everyone and find peaceful solutions to every conflict. Subaru is a skilled mediator and diplomat, and he also has experience with women.
If Subaru was never isekai’d, he could go back to school and have a different kind of adventure. Subaru could be his classmates, Ram, Rem, and Emilia, and he could try to think his way through this amusing harem to keep everyone happy.
2. Darkness from KonoSuba
From the sleazy Kazuma Sato to the bratty goddess Aqua and the reckless Megumin, most of Konosuba’s main characters are hilariously dysfunctional. Then there’s Darkness, a silly crusader who enjoys two things: fighting for justice and getting beaten up.
Darkness is a terrible fighter, but she is a genuinely nice person with high ideals and a big heart. Darkness would make an excellent shojo-style heroine who stumbles right into the handsome prince’s open arms in a rom-com fantasy anime.
1. Shion from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
Shion is one of Rimuru Tempest’s best friends in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, and while she isn’t romantically in love with him, she does appear to be a great potential love interest. Another anime series that could work as a rom-com adventure.
Shion has a lot going for her, from her natural beauty to her upbeat, friendly personality to her incredible warrior skills and bravery. When a love interest came along, she would become extremely shy, and Rimuru and Shuna would act as her matchmakers to make this romance happen.
