Best Anime Like Prison School
1. Grand Blue
Iori Kitahara relocates to the coastal town of Izu for his first year of university, living above Grand Blue, his uncle’s scuba diving shop. Iori has high hopes and dreams of having the perfect college experience, but when he enters the shop, he is sucked into the alcoholic activities of the carefree Diving Club members who frequent the place. Iori reluctantly joins their bizarre party after being persuaded by upperclassmen Shinji Tokita and Ryuujirou Kotobuki. Chisa Kotegawa, his cousin, later walks in and catches him in the act, earning Iori’s scorn.
Grand Blue, based on the popular comedy manga by Kenji Inoue and Kimitake Yoshioka, follows Iori’s misadventures with his eccentric new friends as he strives to realize his ideal college dream while also learning to scuba dive.
Entertaining Comedy? ✓ Men who can’t help but get drunk and strip? ✓ Awkward Virgin friends? ✓ Misunderstandings? ✓
Grand Blue is one of the funniest anime I have seen. In a full-on comedy anime, the plot is probably one of the least important aspects. To me, a comedy anime is all about enjoyable characters & their interactions with each other. And Grand Blue has all of those.
Like most comedy anime, it has a very basic story – a college freshman excited for a great college life. However, it doesn’t go as planned when he’s forced to join the “diving club”, but to his surprise, the members drink alcohol and strip more than dive.
This seems pretty ridiculous already, but it gets even better as the show progresses and more characters get introduced.
2. KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!
Kazuma Satou, a high school student & recluse, finds himself sitting before a beautiful but obnoxious goddess named Aqua after dying a laughable and pathetic death on his way back from buying a game. She gives the NEET two choices: continue on to heaven or reincarnate in every gamer’s fantasy world! Kazuma, who has chosen to start a new life, is quickly tasked with defeating a Demon King who is terrorizing villages. But before he leaves, he can choose one item of any type to help him in his quest, and the future hero chooses Aqua. But Kazuma has made a critical error: Aqua is completely useless!
Unfortunately, their problems do not end there; it turns out that living in such a world is nothing like how it appears in a game. Instead of embarking on an exciting adventure, the pair must first work to cover their living expenses. Their misfortunes have only recently begun!
KonoSuba in general is very hysterical and it has really memorable characters. The theme songs are really good. And it is one of the few anime that has a good dub.
3. SHIMONETA: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist
Japan has become a nation cleansed of all that is obscene and impure since the implementation of strict new morality laws. Authorities have taken extreme measures to ensure that society remains chaste by monitoring citizens with special devices worn around their necks.
Tanukichi Okuma, the son of an infamous terrorist who opposed the chastity laws, has just entered high school, offering his assistance to the student council in order to get close to president Anna Nishikinomiya, his childhood friend and crush. He has no idea that Ayame Kajou, the vice president, has a secret identity: Blue Snow, a masked criminal dedicated to disseminating lewd material among the sheltered public—and Tanukichi has piqued the girl’s interest due to his father’s notoriety.
Tanukichi is soon dragged into her SOX organization, where he is forced to spread obscene propaganda in order to help launch an attack against the government’s oppressive rule. Tanukichi will have to do the unthinkable when he realizes their primary target is the person he admires the most, with their school set as the first point of attack.
4. Kakegurui
Unlike many other schools, Hyakkaou Private Academy prepares students for life after high school. Because many of the students are the children of the world’s wealthiest people, the academy has its own quirks that set it apart from the rest. By day, it is a regular school that teaches history, languages, and other subjects. But at night, it transforms into a gambling den, where they learn how to deal with money and manipulate people. Money is power; those who win the games are at the top of the school.
Yumeko Jabami, a seemingly innocent and beautiful transfer student, is eager to dive into Hyakkaou’s specialized curriculum. She, unlike the others, plays for the thrill of the gamble, and her borderline insane gambling style may bring too many new cards to the table.
5. Great Teacher Onizuka
Eikichi Onizuka, a twenty-two-year-old ex-biker gang leader, Shonan conqueror, and virgin, has a dream: to become Japan’s greatest high school teacher. This isn’t due to a desire to teach, but rather to have a loving teenage wife when he’s old and gray. Even so, there is more to Onizuka than meets the eye for a perverted, greedy, and lazy delinquent. So, when he lands a job as the homeroom teacher of Class 3-4 at the prestigious Holy Forest Academy despite duping the Vice Principal, all of his skills are put to the test, as this class is notorious.
Because they despise all teachers, the students in the class use psychological warfare to mentally break any new homeroom teacher they get, forcing them to quit and leave school. Onizuka, on the other hand, isn’t your typical teacher, and he’s up for any challenge that comes his way.
Bullying, suicide, and sexual harassment are just a few of the issues that his students deal with on a daily basis. Onizuka helps them by addressing the root causes of their problems, even if it means jumping off a building to save a suicidal child. Class 3-4 gradually learns how much fun school can be when you’re a student of the Great Teacher Onizuka, thanks to his eccentric charm and fun-loving nature.
6. Golden Boy
Kintarou Ooe is a specialist in part-time work, riding all over Japan on his trusty steed, the Mikazuki 5, and finding work wherever he can. From political corruption to the delicacy of a young woman’s heart, his adventures provide him with knowledge and experience that cannot be taught in a classroom. With nothing but the open road ahead of him—not to mention the many beautiful women along the way—Kintarou pursues his education while attempting to hold down his various odd jobs, no matter how demeaning they may be. Who knows what will happen as he learns from each task he undertakes? One day, he might even be able to save the world. One thing is certain: this will all be very educational.
7. Highschool of the Dead
The dead began to rise unexpectedly, and Japan was thrown into complete chaos. Takashi Kimuro is forced to kill his best friend when he is bitten and joins the ranks of the walking dead as these monsters terrorize a high school. They narrowly escape their death trap of a school, vowing to protect Rei Miyamoto, the girlfriend of the man he just executed, only to be greeted by a society that has already fallen.
Takashi and Rei soon join forces with other students on a journey to find their family members and discover what caused this massive pandemic. Saeko Busujima, the beautiful president of the Kendo Club, Kouta Hirano, an otaku with a gun fetish, Saya Takagi, the daughter of an influential politician, and Shizuka Marikawa, their hot school nurse, join them. Will the combined strength of these individuals be sufficient to defeat the undead apocalypse?
8. Nanbaka
Nanba is the world’s most formidable prison, designed to house criminals who are too elusive to be held in regular prisons. The four inmates in Cell 13 are especially astute in this regard, having successfully escaped every other prison. There’s Juugo, a lock specialist who’s spent most of his life in prison; Uno, a gambler with a keen sense of intuition; Nico, an otaku whose body reacts strangely to drugs; and Rock, a bruiser with a penchant for food. The four prisoners’ daily shenanigans always cause problems for the building supervisor, Hajime Sugoroku, who desperately tries to keep them from escaping Nanba.
Nanbaka follows the comedic, glitzy exploits of these inmates and their guards. Prison life in Nanba isn’t all that bad—from three square meals a day to sports festivals—and it’s the closest these four have to a home.
9. Armed Girl’s Machiavellism
Originally, the Private Aichi Symbiosis Academy was a high school for upper-class girls. When it became co-ed, the girls asked to be allowed to bring weapons to school out of fear. When that was enforced, the “Supreme Five Swords,” a five-member vigilante corps-like organization, was formed.
After many generations, the five swords eventually evolved into a group that corrected problematic students, and the academy began accepting such students proactively in order to correct them.
After being involved in a large brawl, Nomura Fudou was sent to this school. What will he do when his only options after enrolling are to be expelled from that school or to be corrected in the same way that the other male students were…by being forced to dress and act like a girl!
10. Seitokai Yakuindomo
Takatoshi Tsuda is called out for his untidy uniform on his first day of high school at the formerly all-girls Ousai Private Academy by student council president Shino Amakusa. In apology for delaying Takatoshi’s first class, Shino offers him the position of vice president of the student council, stating that the group needs a male point of view to accommodate the arrival of boys at the school. Despite his displeasure, Takatoshi is appointed as the newest member of the student council despite having yet to enter the school building.
Takatoshi quickly realizes that the other student council members are a little strange: President Shino, who appears studious and serious, but is actually a huge pervert obsessed with the erotic and constantly making lewd jokes; secretary Aria Shichijou, who appears to be a typical sheltered rich girl, but is just as risque, if not more so, than the president; and finally, treasurer Suzu Hagimura, who appears normal but has the body of an elementary school student and is extremely self-conscious of it. Surrounded by these colorful characters, the new vice president is now subjected to an onslaught of sexual humor and insanity.
