Oftentimes an anime is not what it looks like. It might look like the most wholesome anime you’ve ever witnessed at first glance, but it turns out to the be most messed up anime ever. In this post, we’ll be listing 10 of such anime.
Here are 10 Cute But Terrifying Anime You Should Watch!
10. Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero
Yuuna Yuuki is a hero in her everyday life. She is a member of her middle school’s Hero Club, where she does her best to help others and make everyone smile.
But Yuuna, who is always up for a challenge, is about to become an even bigger hero. Mysterious destructive forces known as Vertexes begin to threaten the world she loves, and a strange phone app summons the Hero Club to save it. In order to battle the Vertexes, she and her best friend Mimori Tougou, as well as sisters Fuu and Itsuki Inubouzaki, must transform into magical girls.
In between studying and putting on shows for children, Yuuna and the Hero Club must fight for the survival of their world and confront the harsh realities of their own abilities, all while discovering what it truly means to be a hero.
If magical girl mixed with some drama and slice-of-life sounds appealing to you you should give it a shot. The first half isn’t quite as good as the second half, but if you’re able to stick with it, it’ll pay off.
9. School Days
Makoto Itou, a freshman in high school, first notices Kotonoha Katsura at the start of his second semester. He is immediately taken with her beauty, but his shyness prevents him from approaching her, despite the fact that they ride the same train every day. Instead, he secretly takes a photo of her and sets it as his phone’s wallpaper: a charm that, if kept hidden, is said to help you realize your love. Sekai Saionji, a classmate, notices the picture and, instead of reporting him, offers to help him set up with Kotonoha, even befriending her just for him. As a result, the trio forms an impromptu friendship.
School Days follows the lives of three teenagers as they navigate the high school experience’s ups and downs. In a story full of romance and melancholy, the story of these three students will linger in the mind long after the dramatic conclusion, that’s what they say anyway.
The characters in this anime are seriously some of the dumbest people I have ever seen and I’ve seen plenty of really dumb shit, believe me. The girls are just lining up to be with the main character by the end, for no apparent reason whatsoever.
8. Angel Beats!
Death is one of many mysteries that have baffled humanity since the dawn of time. The burning question of what happens to the soul after death, however, is quickly answered by 17-year-old Yuzuru Otonashi. He discovers the unsettling truth of the afterlife after waking up with no previous memories in a dimension between life and death.
This strange dimension, shaped like a high school, is intended to house those who died untimely deaths. Feeling betrayed by God during their earthly lives, the students of the school have formed the Afterlife Battlefront, a rebellious faction determined to oppose their god-like student council president, Kanade “Angel” Tachibana. Yuri Nakamura, the group’s leader, recruits Otonashi in their fight against Angel in order to gain control of their own lives. Otonashi, however, questions the morality of their actions and goes behind enemy lines to understand the opposing side of their common fate.
The story is revealed irregularly; some episodes teach you various things about the world, while others… not so much. The art is beautiful and overall it’s really enjoyable to watch. It’s one of those where you keep wanting more as you watch each episode.
7. Mirai Nikki (Future Diary)
Mirai Nikki tells the story of a loner high school student, Yukiteru Amano, who discovers that his cell phone can predict the future. He soon finds himself caught in a deadly game of survival with 11 other people, each of whom also has a “Future Diary”. As the game progresses, the contestants fight to survive and eliminate each other in order to be the last one standing.
It is a psychological thriller anime about a death game to become the supreme ruler of the universe and it also has a psychotic yandere stalker girl.
6. Wonder Egg Priority
Ai Ooto is left to deal with her new reality after her best and only friend, Koito Nagase, commits suicide. With nothing else to live for, she follows the instructions of a mysterious entity and is persuaded to buy an egg, specifically a Wonder Egg.
Ai is tasked with saving people from adversities after breaking the egg in a world that materializes during her sleep. She believes that by doing so, she has moved one step closer to saving her best friend. With this dangerous yet tempting opportunity in the palms of her hands, Ai enters a place where she must recognize the relationship between other people’s demons and her own.
A young girl discovers the various inner struggles tormenting humanity and rescues them from their worst fears as past trauma, unforgettable regrets, and innate fears hatch in the bizarre world of Wonder Egg Priority.
5. Perfect Blue
CHAM!, a Japanese idol group, has spent the last two years entertaining its fans. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and CHAM! will lose one of its members, Mima Kirigoe, to pursue her acting career. While Mima’s decision has received mixed reactions, she hopes her fans will continue to support her.
Mima’s life, however, begins to change dramatically after she leaves the group. She takes on a role in a crime drama series in order to shed her pop-idol image, and her career as an actress gradually becomes more demanding and taxing for both Mima and her manager, Rumi Hidaka. To add to Mima’s growing unease, an obsessed fan, unable to accept that Mima is no longer an innocent idol, begins stalking her; a new anonymous website begins to meticulously impersonate her life; and CHAM! appears to be doing better without her. Each disturbing development causes Mima to become increasingly deranged and unable to distinguish between reality and fantasy.
4. Fractale
Fractale is set in a world where rules are followed without question and life is blissful as long as religion is prioritized over everything and prayers are offered on a daily basis.
Clain, the main character, is visited by a mysterious girl, and when she leaves, she leaves behind an equally mysterious girl named Nessa.
The initial bad guys in this anime are bumbling morons with idiotic plans to kidnap Nessa.
The anime then really gets going. Fighting, corruption, bloodshed, death, extortion… it’s got everything.
3. Made in Abyss
The Abyss is a gaping chasm stretching down into the earth’s depths, filled with mysterious creatures and relics from a long time ago. How did it happen? What is at the very bottom? Countless brave individuals known as Divers have attempted to unravel the mysteries of the Abyss by fearlessly plunging into its darkest depths. Those who remain on the surface revere the White Whistles, the best and bravest of the Divers.
Riko, the missing White Whistle Lyza the Annihilator’s daughter, aspires to be like her mother and explore the depths of the Abyss. However, as a new Red Whistle, she is only allowed to explore its uppermost layer. Despite this, Riko has a chance encounter with a mysterious robot dressed as a young boy. She names him Reg, and he has no recollection of the events that led up to his discovery. Certain that the technology used to create Reg must have come from deep within the Abyss, the two decide to venture into the chasm in order to recover his memories and see the bottom of the great pit for themselves.
However, they know not of the harsh reality that is the true existence of the Abyss.
2. School-Live!
Yuki Takeya, a carefree high school junior, looks forward to the School Living Club every day. The club, which consists of the president Yuuri Wakasa, the athletic Kurumi Ebisuzawa, the mature Miki Naoki, the supervising teacher Megumi Sakura, and the club dog Taroumaru, takes pride in making the most of school life. There is only one rule that all club members must follow: they must spend their entire lives on school grounds.
Gakkougurashi! follows the School Living Club’s adventures as they promote independence and self-determination during their lively time at Megurigaoka Private High School.
1. Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki are ordinary middle school girls living ordinary lives until they meet Kyuubey, a cat-like magical familiar, and Homura Akemi, a new transfer student.
Kyuubey makes an offer: he will grant any of their wishes in exchange for them becoming magical girls with enough power to fulfill their dreams. Homura Akemi, a magical girl herself, advises them not to accept the offer, claiming that not everything is as it appears.
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica is a story of hope, despair, and friendship that explores the difficulties of being a magical girl and the price one must pay to make a dream come true.
