The ecchi genre doesn’t have the best reputation along with the harem genre. Ecchi anime are usually thought of as anime with a ridiculous amount of fanservice to compensate for their lack of interesting characters, poor story, and very often little to no world-building at all. But that doesn’t mean that every anime in this genre has a bad story or bad characters or no world-building. In fact, some Ecchi anime have some of the best world-building, plot, and character developments.
In this post, we’ll be listing 15 such Ecchi Anime that are actually good and worth watching!
15. Chobits
Can love survive when computers begin to resemble humans?
Hideki Motosuwa is a young country boy who is working hard in order to attend college. He can barely afford the expenses, let alone the latest fad: Persocoms, personal computers that look exactly like human beings. On his way home one evening, he comes across an abandoned Persocom. She appears to be defective after being taken home and activated, as she can only say one word, “Chii,” which eventually becomes her name. Chii, unlike the other Persocoms, cannot download information onto her hard drive, so Hideki decides to teach her about the world the old-fashioned way, while also studying for his college entrance exams.
Hideki and his friends try to solve the mystery of Chii, who may be a “Chobit,” an urban legend about special units with real human emotions and thoughts, as well as love for their owner. Can love blossom between a Persocom and a human?
14. Highschool of the Dead
The dead began to rise unexpectedly, and Japan was thrown into complete chaos. Takashi Kimuro is forced to kill his best friend when he is bitten and joins the ranks of the walking dead as these monsters terrorize a high school. They narrowly escape their death trap of a school, vowing to protect Rei Miyamoto, the girlfriend of the man he just executed, only to be greeted by a society that has already fallen.
Takashi and Rei soon join forces with other students on a journey to find their family members and discover what caused this massive pandemic. Saeko Busujima, the beautiful president of the Kendo Club, Kouta Hirano, an otaku with a gun fetish, Saya Takagi, the daughter of an influential politician, and Shizuka Marikawa, their hot school nurse, join them. Will the combined strength of these individuals be sufficient to defeat the undead apocalypse?
13. Tsugumomo
A “tsukumogami” is a Japanese folklore term for an object that has gained a soul, becoming alive and self-aware. There are two kinds of tsukumogami: mature “tsugumomo,” which have evolved through years of harmony with their owners, and aberrant “amasogi,” which are premature spirits who are only born to grant the destructive wishes of certain people.
Kazuya Kagami has never left the house without his mother’s obi since her death. He keeps it safe with him at all times, whether at home or at school. When a wig amasogi attacks him one day, he almost loses his life. When everything appears to be over, his prized obi defends him by transforming into a beautiful girl. Kiriha, a tsugumomo owned by Kazuya’s mother, introduces herself.
With the arrival of Kiriha, Kazuya enters a world he has never seen before, a world of gods and tsukumogami.
While tsugumomo is kind of your usual ecchi anime in some ways, the concept behind the whole ‘tsukumogami’ and ‘amagami’ thing was pretty interesting, and I personally enjoyed watching it.
12. Blood Lad
Staz Charlie Blood is a powerful vampire who rules Demon World’s Eastern district. Despite rumours that he is a bloodthirsty and merciless monster, Staz is simply an otaku obsessed with Japanese culture who is completely uninterested in human blood. Staz spends his days lazing around, indulging in anime, manga, and games while his subordinates manage his territory.
Staz is overjoyed when Fuyumi Yanagi, a Japanese girl, unintentionally walks through a portal leading into the demon world. But, just as he begins to develop an unusual attraction to her, his territory is attacked, and Fuyumi is killed. She transforms into a wandering ghost, and the heartbroken Staz vows to resurrect her in order to travel to the human world, which he has always desired.
Blood Lad follows Staz and Fuyumi as they travel to find a magic that can bring humans back to life, soon joined by the spatial magician Bell and the half-werewolf Wolf.
11. The Asterisk War
An unprecedented disaster known as the Invertia reshaped the world in the previous century. Existing nations’ powers dwindled significantly, paving the way for the Integrated Empire Foundation to seize control. More importantly, the Invertia caused the emergence of a new species of human, the Genestella, who are born with extraordinary physical abilities. Its elite are hand-picked from all over the world to attend the top six schools, and they compete in entertainment battles known as Festas.
Ayato Amagiri is a scholarship transfer student at the prestigious Seidoukan Academy, which has recently been plagued by poor performance. Through a series of events, he accidentally sees Julis-Alexia von Riessfeld, the popular Witch of Resplendent Flames, half-dressed! Julis, enraged, challenges him to a duel for invading her privacy. After the student council president cancels the duel, Ayato reveals that he has no interest in Festas. Instead, he enrolled in the academy in order to find his missing elder sister. When a more nefarious plot emerges, Ayato sets out to win despite being surrounded by some of the most talented Genestella on the planet.
10. The Familiar of Zero
Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière is a self-absorbed mage in a world of wands, cloaks, and royalty. Despite attending Tristain Academy, a prestigious school for magicians, Louise has a major problem: she is unable to properly cast magic, earning her the nickname “Louise the Zero” from her classmates.
Louise’s summoning causes a catastrophic explosion when first-year students are required to perform a summoning ritual! Everyone thinks this is another failure, but when the smoke clears, a young man named Saito Hiraga appears. Saito, Louise’s companion, is now treated as a slave, forced to clean her clothes and eat from the ground. However, when an unfamiliar brand is discovered etched on Saito’s hand as a result of the summoning ritual, it is thought to be the mark of a powerful familiar named Gandalfr.
The Familiar of Zero is a wild, adventurous, and explosive novel that follows Saito as he adjusts to his new life and Louise demonstrates that she is more than her nickname suggests.
The Familiar of Zero is an old isekai that I, for some reason, didn’t watch until earlier this year. It was pretty enjoyable to watch and a little spoiler for those who haven’t watched it yet, Louise’s personality is pretty similar to Taiga (from Toradora) so if you’re into that, you’ll enjoy watching it.
9. Prison School
For the first time in its history, Hachimitsu Private Academy, an elite all-girls high school, opens its grandiose doors to male students. The five males who enroll, on the other hand, are a merry band of perverts who can’t communicate with girls! Shingo, the foreign delinquent, the strange and sickly “Jo,” the overweight “Andrei,” the intelligent “Gakuto,” and Kiyoshi, the most normal of the bunch, make up this group of misfits.
Feeling troubled by their lack of female interaction, the five boys embark on a dangerous mission to spy on several girls while they bathe. However, due to a series of mishaps, their operation eventually fails, exposing the boys’ actions to the entire school.
The menacing Underground Student Council sentences the boys to one month in prison for their crimes. The unforgiving beauties of the council have no idea that the boys’ perverted and unusual antics are only going to get worse.
Prison School is one of the funniest anime I have watched, the concept behind the anime is interesting, the characters have funny personalities and overall it’s a really good anime if you wanna laugh for once.
8. Kill la Kill
Ryuuko Matoi has been wandering the land in search of her father’s killer since his murder. She arrives at the prestigious Honnouji Academy, a high school unlike any other, after following her only lead—the missing half of his invention, the Scissor Blade. Satsuki Kiryuuin, the imposing and cold-hearted student council president, rules the academy alongside her powerful underlings, the Elite Four. Satsuki bestows special clothes called “Goku Uniforms” on those at the top of the school’s brutally competitive hierarchy, which grants the wearer unique superhuman abilities.
Ryuuko retreats to her razed home after being severely beaten in a fight with one of the students in uniform, where she discovers Senketsu, a rare and sentient “Kamui,” or God Clothes. Senketsu awakens after coming into contact with Ryuuko’s blood, latching onto her and bestowing immense power upon her. Ryuuko now takes a stand against the Elite Four, armed with Senketsu and the Scissor Blade, hoping to reach Satsuki and finally find out who killed her father.
7. Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon?
Life is never dull in the bustling city of Orario, especially for Bell Cranel, a naive young man who aspires to be the greatest adventurer in the land. His dreams become a little more real after a chance meeting with the lonely goddess Hestia. Bell embarks on a fantastic quest with her help, venturing deep within the city’s monster-infested catacombs known only as the “Dungeon.” In the cavernous depths of this terrifying labyrinth, death lurks around every corner, and a mysterious power moves among the shadows.
Surviving is a hard-won privilege, even on the surface. Indeed, nothing is ever certain in a world where gods and humans coexist, especially when they frequently clash. But one thing is certain: the dauntlessly optimistic protagonist of this herculean tale will face a slew of blunders, triumphs, and friendships.
DanMachi or Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon? was one of the first anime that I watched and I really enjoyed watching it. Seeing Bell grow stronger than his old weak self and overcome challenges as he increases his level all while meeting new people who become a part of his family is really wholesome and satisfying to watch!
6. Nisemonogatari (& the rest from the Monogatari Series)
Surviving a vampire attack, meeting several girls plagued by supernatural entities, and simply trying to get through life are some of the challenges Koyomi Araragi has faced recently. On top of that, one morning he wakes up to find himself kidnapped and tied up by his girlfriend Hitagi Senjougahara. She has taken it upon herself to imprison Araragi in order to keep him safe from Deishuu Kaiki, a swindler who conned Senjougahara’s family. However, when Araragi receives a frantic message from his sister Karen, he learns that the fraud has targeted her.
Tsukihi, his other sister, is having her own problems in addition to Karen’s. And when two mysterious women who seem to know more than they should about Araragi and his special group of friends enter their lives, not even he can predict their true intentions, let alone the disastrous truths that are about to be revealed.
One thing you should keep in mind if you’re thinking of watching the Monogatari series is that it is quite dialogue-heavy, so if you get bored easily or have ADHD, I wouldn’t recommend watching it.
5. No Game No Life
Disboard is a world ruled by Tet, the One True God, and home to sixteen sentient races. Imanity, the lowest of the sixteen, is made up of humans, a race with no affinity for magic. Humankind appears to have no way out of its predicament in a place where everything is decided through simple games—but the arrival of two outsiders changes everything.
Stepbrothers Sora and Shiro are two inseparable shut-ins who dominate various online games under the username “Blank” on Earth. While they are well-known on the internet, the pair believes that life is just another boring game. They are suddenly transported to Disboard after responding to a message from an unknown user. Tet, the mysterious sender, informs them about the world’s unbreakable rules. Following Tet’s departure, Sora and Shiro begin their search for more information and a place to stay, which leads them to Elkia—Imanity’s last remaining kingdom.
Stephanie Dola, an emotional girl vying for the kingdom’s sovereignty, meets the duo there. In desperation, she attempts to reclaim her father’s throne, but her folly renders her goal impossible to achieve. Sora and Shiro are inspired by the girl’s motivation and passion and decide to help Stephanie get Elkia back on its feet, ultimately aiming to become the new rulers of the enigmatic realm.
No Game No Life had a really cool concept and battles were fun to watch but once again they had to ruin it with the weird bs. I still wish they made a season 2 for it as even with the whole step-siblings thing it was pretty enjoyable to watch and I loved the world in No Game No Life.
4. Chivalry of a Failed Knight
Few humans in this world have the ability to manipulate their souls into powerful weapons. These people, dubbed “Blazers,” study and train at the prestigious Hagun Academy to become Mage-Knights; among them is so-called failure Ikki Kurogane, the only F-rated Blazer. When the academy’s worst student sees Stella Vermillion, an A-ranked Blazer who also happens to be a princess, naked, she challenges him to a duel with dire consequences—the loser becomes the winner’s slave. Stella couldn’t possibly lose, right?
The Chivalry of a Failed Knight follows Ikki as he tries to prove his strength to a world that believes he is the weakest, all while making new friends, gaining wisdom, and gaining experience.
All I have to say for Chivalry of a Failed Knight is that I wish there was a second season but unfortunately, studios nowadays pick up the trashiest of series instead of continuing with the ones fans actually want to watch.
3. Golden Boy
Kintarou Ooe is a specialist in part-time work, riding all over Japan on his trusty steed, the Mikazuki 5, and finding work wherever he can. From political corruption to the delicacy of a young woman’s heart, his adventures provide him with knowledge and experience that cannot be taught in a classroom. With nothing but the open road ahead of him—not to mention the many beautiful women along the way—Kintarou pursues his education while attempting to hold down his various odd jobs, no matter how demeaning they may be. Who knows what will happen as he learns from each task he undertakes? One day, he might even be able to save the world.
One thing is certain: this will all be extremely educational!
Golden Boy in my humble opinion is such an enjoyable anime, It has a lot of messed-up humor which I like a lot. It only has 6 episodes so I’d definitely recommend watching this one if you’re looking for a short hilarious anime.
2. Food Wars
Souma Yukihira has been cooking with his father Jouichirou since he can remember. As a sous chef at his father’s restaurant, he has spent years honing his culinary skills and creating new dishes to wow their customers. He hopes to one day surpass his father’s skill and take over the restaurant, but he is surprised to learn that Jouichirou is closing the shop to take a job in New York.
Rather than following in his father’s footsteps, Souma enrolls at the prestigious Tootsuki Culinary Academy, where only 10% of students graduate. The school is well-known for its “Shokugeki,” which are intense cooking competitions between students that are frequently used to settle debates and arguments. Jouichirou tells Souma that he must outperform him in order to survive the next three years at Tootsuki and graduate.
The brutal curriculum and fiercely competitive student body of the academy await the young chef, who must learn to navigate the perilous environment if he hopes to realize his dreams. But is talent alone enough to propel him to the top?
I was gonna put Food Wars in the number 1 spot but I didn’t ’cause for me, Food Wars sometimes felt a bit dragged and I am not a big fan of the ending either. But that doesn’t mean it’s bad, Food Wars is one of the best Ecchi anime I’ve watched and the fan service in this anime is quite creative and fun to watch if I do say so myself.
Watching Soma face challenges head-on and interact with the other characters in the anime, and their journey together while striving towards the same goal was really enjoyable to watch. The characters in Food wars are really lovable, there are hardly any characters I don’t like. And the whole foodgasm thing was also hilarious to watch. Highly recommend watching Food Wars it is one of my favorite anime of all time.
1. Mushoku Tensei
Despite being bullied, scorned, and oppressed his entire life, a 34-year-old shut-in mustered the courage to attempt something heroic—only for it to end tragically. In an unexpected turn of events, he awakens in another world as Rudeus Greyrat, resuming his life as a baby born to two loving parents.
Rudeus quickly adapts to his new environment by retaining his memories and knowledge from his previous life. He begins to demonstrate magical talent that exceeds all expectations, honing his skill with the assistance of a mage named Roxy Migurdia. Rudeus is taught swordplay by his father, Paul, and meets Sylphiette, a young girl who quickly becomes his best friend.
As Rudeus’ second chance at life begins, he strives to make the most of his newfound freedom while overcoming his traumatic past. And maybe one day he’ll find the one thing he couldn’t find in his previous life: love.’
Now before everyone starts calling me a weirdo, let me explain. Yes, I know Mushoku Tensei doesn’t have the best reputation for various reasons. But believe me, if you can get past Rudeus’ behavior/actions in the first half of the series, it’s actually gold up ahead. Part 2 of the series pays off for all the weird stuff you have to endure in the first half.
Mushoku Tensei is regarded as the series that established and defined modern isekai. Mushoku Tensei is considered the progenitor of various isekai tropes that are popular in today’s shows, from the medieval fantasy world setting to the usually NEET loser protagonist being hit by truck-kun to the element-based magic systems.
Everything from the story, characters & world-building is top-tier. In fact, its world-building is probably its best point.
Overall if you can get past all that shit in the beginning, (and the occasional weird scenarios) you’ll have an awesome time watching Mushoku Tensei.
