The anime is based on Haruki Kuou’s light novel series Liar Liar: Usotsuki Tenkousei wa Ikasama Cheat chan to Game wo Seisuru sou desu, which began in 2019 and has 13 volumes as of March 2023. The story takes place on Academy Island, where students’ ranks are determined by “Games.” Hiroto is a transfer student who defeats the champion Sarasa and becomes the quickest to achieve the rank of “Seven Star.” Hiroto’s position is based on a lie, but he needs to keep it in order to achieve his goal.
The light novels have also inspired a manga adaptation by Funa Yukina. Funa Yukina is the manga artist responsible for adapting the story from the light novels into a visual format.
Media Factory that publishes the light novels describes the series as:
Everything on Academy Island is settled through “Games” waged for a certain number of stars, with the strongest student receiving the ranking of Seven Stars. Hiroto, a transfer student, unexpectedly defeats the strongest empress and becomes the school’s pseudo-strongest! Begin a mind game of lies and bluffs!
