YOASOBI’s “Idol” has ascended to the top position on yet another music chart, claiming the number one spot on Apple Music’s Top 100: Global chart. This achievement signifies the immense popularity of the OSHI NO KO opening theme, as it resonates with listeners worldwide.
On the Billboard charts, “Idol” fell to second place on the Global chart (excluding the United States) due to BTS’ “Take Two,” but climbed from 10th to 8th place on the Global 200 Top 10 (its previous peak was ninth).
The song has remained at the top of Billboard Japan’s Hot 100, TikTok Weekly Top 20, Streaming Songs, Top User Generated, Hot Animation, and Download Songs charts.
“Idol” was released on streaming services on April 12, the same day as the premiere of the OSHI NO KO anime, and on CD on June 21 in Japan. It is based on Aka Akasaka’s “45510” story from the OSHI NO KO manga. The music video debuted on April 12, with an English version following on May 25. At the time of writing, the former had over 180 million views on YouTube, while the latter had only 16 million.
The OSHI NO KO anime is directed by Daisuke Hiramaki (Selection Project, Asteroid in Love) at Doga Kobo with Chao Nekotomi (Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie opening director and storyboarder, Selection Project Episode 7 dance part director and storyboarder et al.) as assistant director, Kanna Hirayama (Rent-A-Girlfriend) as character designer and chief character designer, and Jin Tanaka (Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club, Laid-Back Camp) as series composer. Outside of Japan, HIDIVE and Bilibili are streaming the entertainment industry-themed show.
OSHI NO KO manga which was drawn by Mengo Yokoyari began serialization in Weekly Young Jump in 2020 and has 11 tankoubon volumes as of March 2023. It is published by the Young Jump Comics imprint Yen Press describes the premise as follows:
Gorou is a gynecologist and idol fan who’s in shock after his favorite star, Ai, announces an impromptu hiatus. Little does Gorou realize that he’s about to forge a bond with her that defies all common sense! Lies are an idol’s greatest weapon in this outrageous manga from Aka Akasaka (Kaguya-sama: Love is War) and Mengo Yokoyari (Scum’s Wish).
