Orion on the Board (Banjou no Orion), the latest manga by Naoshi Arakawa, has begun serialization in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine. The new series debuted in the sixth issue of 2024 (released on January 10 JST).
The world of shogi is the setting for Orion on the Board. It follows prodigy Yuuhi Ninomiya, a teenager who is currently on a long losing streak. His 17th defeat comes at the hands of his opponent Kanata, who has a 27-game winning streak. Yuuhi is brought to a bar by his friends, where he meets Tsuki, a girl with incredible shogi skills.
Naoshi Arakawa is best known for 2011’s Your Lie in April (Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso), a music-themed teen romance drama that spawned a TV anime series and a live-action film.
If you’re unfamiliar with Your Lie in April, here’s the synopsis:
Kousei Arima was a genius pianist until his mother’s sudden death took away his ability to play. Each day was dull for Kousei. But, then he meets a violinist named Kaori Miyazono who has an eccentric playing style. His monotonous life was about to change forever.
