The manga publisher Young Animal announced on June 7 that Kentaro Miura’s unfinished manga masterpiece Berserk is coming back with new chapters just over a year after the author died. After about 30 years of beautiful art and incredibly complicated plots, the series ended suddenly when Miura’s apprentices at Studio Gaga finished his last unfinished chapter. But since then, Studio Gaga has been working closely with Kouji Mori, Miura’s best friend, and closest confidant, to finish Miura’s unique vision the way he wanted.
Mori claims that he learned how Miura intended to end the Berserk story from discussions prior to Miura’s death and intends to bring the series to its natural conclusion alongside many of Miura’s assistants.
According to Mori, Miura’s former assistants approached him, claiming they wanted to finish the final chapters Miura had left unfinished. Mori agreed to assist them and obtained the support and approval needed to complete the story after contacting Young Animal.
“I have a message and promise to everyone,” Mori said. “I will recall the details as much as possible and tell the story. Also, I will only write the episodes that Miura talked to me about. I will not flesh it out. I will not write episodes that I don’t remember clearly. I will only write the lines and stories that Miura described to me. Of course, it will not be perfect. Still, I think I can almost tell the story that Miura wanted to tell.”
Young Animal stated in a statement that it believes this solution, “while imperfect,” is the “best way” to bring Miura’s vision of Berserk to life. The plan is to finish the current Fantasia Arc/Elf Island Chapter before beginning a new arc. That arc will presumably conclude Berserk.
Berserk will resume on June 24, in an upcoming issue of Young Animal.
