The anime adaptation of Kaiju No. 8 has received a second trailer and an April 2024 release date. The former begins with a kaiju rampage before transitioning to various scenes featuring protagonist Kafka Hibino, his childhood friend and Defence Forces’ Third Unit captain Mina Ashiro, and his friend Reno Ichikawa.
The trailer also reveals that Masaya Fukunishi will play Kafka, while Asami Seto and Wataru Katou will play Mina and Reno, respectively.
Kaiju No. 8 is based on Naoya Matsumoto’s Shueisha-published manga, which began serialization on Shonen Jump+ in 2020 and has 10 tankoubon volumes as of August 2023. VIZ Media describes the manga as follows:
Kafka hopes to one day keep his pact with his childhood friend Mina to join the Japan Defense Force and fight by her side. But while she’s out neutralizing kaiju as Third Division captain, Kafka is stuck cleaning up the aftermath of her battles. When a sudden rule change makes Kafka eligible for the Defense Force, he decides to try out for the squad once more. There’s just one problem—he’s made the Defense Force’s neutralization list under the code name Kaiju No. 8.
Production I.G is in charge of animation production, while Studio Khara is in charge of kaiju supervision (design and artwork). The names of the employees have yet to be revealed.
