Natsume’s Book of Friends, a long-running anime series that debuted in 2008, is getting a seventh season.
The announcement of the new season comes with the 15th anniversary of the Natsume’s Book of Friends anime. A commemorative trailer and visual have also been released.
The show’s last season aired in 2017. The series was later adapted into two anime films in 2018 and 2021. There are also a few OVA episodes.
Natsume’s Book of Friends is based on Yuki Midorikawa’s Hakusensha-published manga, which began serialization in 2005 and has 29 tankoubon volumes as of January 2023. According to Viz Media, the plot is as follows:
Reiko bound the names of demons and spirits in her Book of Friends when she was Takashi’s age, enslaving them to her capricious whim. Takashi now owns the book, and the creatures will go to any length to reclaim their names.
The manga was originally published as a one-shot in LaLa DX. LaLa is currently serializing it.
Brain’s Base produced the Natsume’s Book of Friends anime until Season 5 when Shuka took over as the animation production company. Takahiro Oomori (Season 1-4 director) served as chief director for Natsume’s Book of Friends: The Waking Rock and the Strange Visitor 2021, with Hideki Ito (since the 2018 movie) as director, Akira Takata (since Season 1) as character designer, and Sadayuki Murai (series composer since Season 3) as scriptwriter.
