Netflix has finally revealed the first trailer for its upcoming live-action adaptation of One Piece, we got the first look at Netflix’s Tudum event today. The series will have 8 episodes and will start streaming on Netflix on August 31st.
The trailer shows about 90 seconds of the live-action adaptation, which stars Iñaki Godoy as Luffy, as well as giant sea monsters and of course, Luffy’s stretchy arm.
The main cast includes:
Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, and Taz Skylar as Vinsmoke Sanji. Meanwhile, Peter Gadiot is playing Shanks.
The live-action adaptation, based on Eiichiro Oda’s long-running manga and anime, was first announced in 2020. We’ve seen a few teases since then, but this is our first proper look at the show. Oda wrote in a letter last month that Netflix has “promised that we won’t launch until I’m satisfied,” implying that the series may be delayed from its scheduled 2023 debut. However, this was clearly not the case.
“Considering my expected life span, I believe this is my last chance to bring One Piece to the entire world,” Oda stated at the time. “If we go ahead with it, I want to be able to supervise things while I’m still active. That’s why I agreed to the One Piece live-action adaptation back in 2016.”

Gol D. Roger, a man referred to as the “King of the Pirates,” is set to be executed by the World Government. But just before his demise, he confirms the existence of a great treasure, One Piece, located somewhere within the vast ocean known as the Grand Line. Announcing that One Piece can be claimed by anyone worthy enough to reach it, the King of the Pirates is executed and the Great Age of Pirates begins.
Twenty-two years later, a young man by the name of Monkey D. Luffy is ready to embark on his own adventure, searching for One Piece and striving to become the new King of the Pirates. Armed with just a straw hat, a small boat, and an elastic body, he sets out on a fantastic journey to gather his own crew and a worthy ship that will take them across the Grand Line to claim the greatest status on the high seas.
Since its debut in July 1997, One Piece has published over 1000 chapters (collected into over 100 tankōbon volumes) and generated a global franchise, including an anime adaptation from Toei Animation, numerous feature films, a plethora of other items, and now a live action adaptation by Netflix.
