In honor of the manga’s 40th anniversary, a new Fist of the North Star anime titled Fist of the North Star: Hokuto no Ken has been announced. The announcement was made on September 13th, Japan’s Fist of the North Star Day.
According to the press release, the new show, which is currently in development, will feature “all-new casts and creators using [the] latest animation technology.” The release date and streaming availability will be announced in the future.
The Fist of the North Star (Hokuto no Ken) manga was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from 1983 to 1988. Buronson wrote the story, and Tetsuo Hara illustrated it. Kenshiro, a master of the Hokuto Shinken martial arts, becomes a savior in a post-apocalyptic world devastated by nuclear war in the manga.
The manga inspired a two-season anime series, now famous for the line “You are already dead,” and an anime film in the 1980s. Between 2006 and 2008, a new series comprised of OVA and films was released in five installments.
The manga also spawned a live-action film in 1995, a stage play, and video games. Hokuto no Ken: Jubaku no Machi, a novel published in 1996, was adapted into a three-episode OVA titled New Fist of the North Star in 2003-2004.
