For years, people have talked about whether or not Saitama is the strongest character not just in One Punch Man but in all of anime and manga. The name of the show comes from the fact that he always beats his opponents with just one punch, no matter how strong they are. But in Chapter 166, he tops himself by making the Zero Punch move.
To understand how Saitama learned this new move, it’s important to remember their last fight. When a God gave Garou divine powers, the Hero Hunter was able to match Saitama’s strength for a short time. Their fight got so bad that it could have caused the Earth to be destroyed, so Blast’s group sent them to one of Jupiter’s moons. That was the start of a big change in Saitama.
When Saitama got to Jupiter’s moon, he started fighting with all his strength, which means he used several killer moves. At first, Garou was able to keep up with the Bald Cape, but as the fight went on, Saitama quickly pushed himself past his own limits and pulled away from Garo. When Garo was no longer a threat, Saitama stopped caring about the fight and went back to being his usual self. He quickly won the match by slamming Garo back to earth, which forced Garo to accept his terrible loss.
Garo learned that what he was doing was pointless when he saw that Saitama was an impassable wall. His carelessness led to Tareo’s death, which made him feel sad for a short time. He then asked Saitama for a favor, which led to the second important part of Saitama’s new skill. Garo had Saitama copy his ultimate skill, which gave him the power of a God without having to borrow it from one. Because of this, Saitama went back in time and beat Garo before he could hurt anyone.
Although it seems like Saitama’s Zero Punch is simply the product of Garo’s ultimate skill, that may only be half the truth. Garo’s ability undeniably sends Saitama back in time, but it does not necessarily allow him to break causality. Saitama is only able to execute a punch from the future since his power underwent abnormal development during the fight on Jupiter’s moon — as One-Punch Man explained in Chapter 166. This means that while Garo’s ability sends Saitama back in time, Saitama’s incredulous power level is what allows him to create a paradox — a reversion of causality.
In Conclusion
Saitama uses Garo’s skill to turn back time, and then his future self will punch him. Once that punch hits, it will wipe out the future Saitama is in and send the bald hero back to his body from the past. So, technically, neither his past nor his present body has thrown that punch. It’s just an effect without a cause.
The Zero Punch does more than just turn back time. It can do things that shouldn’t be possible, like let Saitama keep his old memories and bring things from the future, like Genos’s core, into the past. Now that he has this power, it’s unclear how Saitama plans to use it in future One-Punch Man updates. After all, it seems like the perfect thing to know if you missed a sale at the grocery store.
