After premiering on both Netflix and Ani-One Asia, Oshi no Ko has quickly become one of the most popular anime series on MyAnimeList. Despite its appearance as a typical idol anime, Oshi no Ko takes a unique approach by exploring the dark and seedy side of the industry, making for a refreshing change of pace.
The 90-minute debut episode was well received by fans, thanks in part to the exceptional storytelling and stunning visuals by studio Doga Kobo.
Aka Akasaka, the creator of Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, wrote the manga, which began serialization in April 2020. An anime adaptation was announced in June 2022, following the story of twins Ruby and Aqua, born to popular idol Ai Hoshino. However, when Ai’s gynecologist is murdered just as her due date approaches, he is unexpectedly reincarnated as one of her twin children.

Right from the start, the first episode of Oshi no Ko subverts expectations by tackling the sensitive topic of teenage pregnancy, which is rarely depicted in anime. It is also poignant to see how much young fan Sarina-chan is affected by Ai’s pregnancy. Adding further intrigue to the story is the mystery surrounding the twins’ father.
As the plot progresses, the twins witness their mother’s brutal murder and are determined to discover the identity of the perpetrator. Following in their mother’s footsteps, they venture into the Japanese idol world, where things quickly escalate as they try to uncover the truth about their mother’s death.
With its engaging storyline and strong characters, Oshi no Ko is a top contender for the best anime of Spring 2023. The first episode is available for streaming on Netflix, Ani-One Asia, and HIDIVE, while the manga can be accessed digitally on Shueisha’s Manga Plus platform.
