The latest Billboard Japan Hot 100 Chart has been released, and YOASOBI’s “Idol,” the opening theme song for the Spring 2023 anime OSHI NO KO, is at the top.
In addition to the Hot 100, “Idol” is the top song on the Streaming Songs and Hot Animation charts, and YOASOBI is the top artist on the Artist 100 chart. Ayase holds the same position on the Hot 100 Composers and Hot 100 Lyricists charts.
The placement of “Idol” on the Billboard Japan Charts is the latest indication of the song’s popularity; the animated music video directed by Naoya Nakayama (“Chika Dance” ending sequence from Kaguya-sama Love is War, “stars we chase” performance sequence from Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club Season 2) has amassed 21 million views on YouTube since its April 12 debut.
Other Top 10 anime songs on the new Hot 100 Chart include Spitz’s “Utsukushii Hire” (the theme song for the recently released Detective Conan: Kurogane no Submarine film) and MAN WITH A MISSIONmilet’s “Kizuna no Kiseki” (the opening song for another Spring 2023 anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc).
The OSHI NO KO anime is based on the Shueisha-published manga written by Aka Akasaka and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari, which debuted in Weekly Young Jump in 2020 and has 10 tankoubon volumes as of January 2023. “Idol” is based on Akasaka’s story 45510.
