Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: Everything You Need To Know

The wait for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is nearly over, with the release date only a few days away. Over the last few months, we’ve seen a slew of updates revealing more about the upcoming Switch games, which will be set in the new Paldea region, which is home to a slew of new Pokemon to add to our Scarlet and Violet Pokedex, including the excellent Greavard. As the series’ first open-world entries, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about what’s in store.

You’ll be facing gym battles, picnics, and so much more as you progress through three different storylines in the order you want. As we get closer to the release date, read on for a refresher on everything we know so far about Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Release Date

Nintendo has now confirmed that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are set to release on November 18, 2022.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Gen 9 Starters

As with previous games in the Pokemon series, players will be able to choose from three starter Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. The new starters are the Grass type cat Sprigatito, the Fire type croc Fuecoco, and the Water type duckling Quaxly. All three are very adorable in their own way.

The games’ official website also provides some insight into the characters’ personalities. Feucoco, the little crocodile, is described as laid back and relaxed, while the grass kitty is said to be fickle and changeable. The little duckling, on the other hand, is earnest and tidy.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Legendaries

The most recent trailer revealed the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Legendaries that will be featured in the new adventure. The eye-catching Koraidon is the Legendary Pokemon of Pokemon Scarlet, while Miraidon is the Legendary Pokemon of Pokemon Violet. They both wear the colours of their respective versions, which is appropriate. While there is a lot of mystery surrounding these two Pokemon, they are naturally said to be more powerful than other critters.

The upcoming Pokémon games are set in the region of Paldea, based on the real-world Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe.

According to the Pokemon Company, The games will allow players to explore freely in a richly expressed open world, and there are several unique locals across the Paldea region.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Open-World Adventure

Pokemon Sword and Shield allowed us to run around certain wild areas, which were later expanded upon in Pokemon Legends: Arceus. The latter release had several large open areas to explore across a world map, but it wasn’t truly open-world.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet appear to be taking this a step further with an open world featuring towns that “blend seamlessly into the wilderness with no borders.” We’ll be able to see Pokemon in the wild once more, with the freedom to explore this new region’s skies, seas, streets, and forests. The trailer showed off a variety of locations that we can’t wait to see in person.

There’s also a day/night cycle in-game, but it’s based on a game clock rather than your Switch clock or real-life time.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Exploration

The new play area in the game is very large, and Game Freak has made it easier to get around by adding mount types that can be used with the Legendary Pokemon. Each of the Legendary Pokemon will have its own unique Form that will allow players to quickly travel across different types of terrain.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Co-Op

The Pokémon Company has said that you’ll be able to play Pokémon Scarlet & Violet in four-player multiplayer. This is a first for the series, though we don’t know if this will be for both online or local multiplayer yet.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Auto-Battling

The ability to use auto-battling in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is certainly unique to the series. You’ll be able to send out a Pokemon and have it battle wild Pokemon and gather items without your intervention. According to the official website(opens in new tab), “When your Pokemon is out and about, you have the option of staying by its side to keep an eye on it or searching for items nearby. Your Pokemon can earn items and experience points by defeating wild Pokemon in auto battles!”

From what it sounds like, you’ll be able to send your Pokemon out to gather items much like in Pokemon Legends Arceus, but with even more freedom.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet New Regional Forms

Paldea, like Alola, Galar, and Hisui before it, has its own set of Pokémon. Paldean Wooper is Generation IX’s first Paldean form Pokémon, and he’s a variant of Generation II’s blue friend. We expect to see more of these in the coming months.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Poke Portal

Just because Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will have more co-op features doesn’t mean that Game Freak is getting rid of competitive play. The developer has announced that players will still be able to trade and battle with trainers from all over the world using the Poke Portal. This new system will let you Link Trade with a specific person and engage in surprise trades with random trainers. There will also be a Link Battle option in the Poke Portal for those who want to test their party’s strength.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet TM Craft

The new Pokemon games, Scarlet and Violet, will let you craft your own TMs in order to customize the movesets of your favorite Pokemon. You can do this by spending League Points, which are obtained as you progress through the story, or by collecting materials dropped by wild Pokemon after battles.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Terastallize

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s key new feature will make its local Pokemon shine and glimmer like gems. This happens when a Pokemon ‘Terastallizes,’ causing a Tera Jewel to appear like a crown above the pocket monster’s head and the creature’s body to glisten like a cut gemstone. Every Pokemon in the Paldea region has the ability to Terastallize, which grants them special abilities in battle.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Picnic Party

You can spend time with your favorite Pokemon at a Pokemon Scarlet and Violet picnic. You’ll be able to set up a picnic and relax with your roster while exploring the vast wilderness of the Paldea Region. You can completely customize the style and layout of your picnic, and then invite your Pokemon to gather around you. When the pocket monsters run out of Poke Balls, they’ll play with each other – and your friends if you’re playing co-op. Furthermore, it is at a picnic that you will be able to clean your Pokemon (to strengthen their bond with you and replenish their HP), as well as make unique sandwiches that will bestow special effects on your group.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Tera Raid Battles

The Tera Raid Battles are just one of the new features coming to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet that take advantage of the new four-player co-op. This new battle mode pits four players against a Terastallized wild Pokemon. These powerful Pokemon are on a time limit, so players will need to work together to take them down.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Photo Mode

Pokémon now has its own dedicated photo mode. You’re no longer limited to taking screenshots in specific locations, as in Arceus, or simply using the Switch’s native screenshot function. You can now pause and take selfies with your Pocket Monsters wherever you want!

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Character Customization

The ‘Jump into a Paldean Journey’ trailer showed us some of the customization options we’ll have to use to change the look of our Trainer. We’ll be able to visit a hair salon in the Paldea region to change our hairstyle, hair color, eye color, eye-lash shape, and much more.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet New Gym Leaders

We’ll be fighting Pokemon Gyms in the new Paldea region, just like in previous games. With more updates revealing some of the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet gym leaders, we’ve gradually begun to learn who we’ll be facing in these gyms. All of the gym leaders have their own distinct personalities and partner Pokemon, with unique character designs that complement the Pokemon types they specialize in. Iono, an Electric-type gym leader whose sidekick is the new frog-like Pokemon Bellibot, was the most recent face to appear.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Version Differences

Another returning tradition for the series is that different versions will offer different Pokemon and legendaries. Along with the two new Legendary Pokemon that will be available in either version, Game Freak has confirmed some other Pokemon Scarlet and Violet version exclusives and differences.

For one thing, depending on the version you select, your player character will be dressed differently. In the upcoming Pokemon adventure, two new professors will be introduced, and who you meet will depend on the version you choose.

Trainers who select Pokemon Scarlet will meet Professor Sada (left), whereas those who select Pokemon Violet will meet Professor Turo. According to the game’s official website, each professor is conducting research into “certain lore passed down” in the new region. How enigmatic.
