The Summer 2022 anime season has begun, and several exciting series have been released in recent months. With so many returning anime like Overlord, Classroom of the Elite and The Devil is a Part-Timer! or the highly anticipated new anime like Call of the Night or My Stepmom’s Daughter is My Ex to choose from, We decided to Rank the Best Anime In Summer 2022!
25. Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer
One day, college student Yuuhi Amamiya is approached by talking lizard Sir Noi Crezant. Crezant immediately launches into a fantastical tale: the powerful mage Animus plans to destroy the Earth with his biscuit hammer, a massive contraption looming high in Earth’s orbit. The princess and her Beast Knights are Earth’s only hope, and their mission is to protect the princess and defeat Animus.
This is by far the lowest-rated anime this season, the premise of the story is actually pretty creative but unfortunately, this anime got a $10 budget…
24. My Isekai Life: I Gained a Second Character Class and Became the Strongest Sage in the World
Yuuji Sano gets a second chance after working himself to death in a hostile corporate environment when he transmigrates to a game-like fantasy world. Despite his desire to live a quiet life, Yuuji discovers that he is a Monster Tamer, the lowest rank of adventurer. He tames a number of slimes around him and, with their assistance, gains magical powers to become a Sage—a second profession that capitalizes on such potential.
You might not agree with me on the best anime this season but we can all agree that My Isekai Life is probably the worst anime this season. You don’t even have to watch the anime, you can just read the title instead and you’ll still understand the premise, and pretty much the entire plot.
23. The Maid I Hired Recently Is Mysterious
Lilith, the maid hired to look after young Yuuri and his family’s mansion, appears suspicious: she appears to be too good to be true. Every dish she serves is delicious, the entire house sparkles after she cleans it, and all of the clothing has a pleasant scent since she started doing the laundry. Furthermore, Yuuri’s suspicions are heightened by her devilishly beautiful eyes. Is Lilith a witch or a sorceress? Yuuri is unable to figure it out.
Despite his reservations, Yuuri must live with Lilith while attempting to solve the mystery behind her otherworldly allure.
22. Black Summoner
Kelvin wakes up in a strange new place with no memory of his previous life, only to discover that he’s traded those memories for powerful new abilities during his recent transmigration. As a Summoner, he enters a whole new world, with the goddess who brought him over as his first Follower! Kelvin begins his new life as an adventurer, and it isn’t long before he discovers his secret desire to fight.
Black Summoner is the perfect example of a generic isekai anime. Everything in this anime is so generic that I didn’t even need to explain the premise. It isn’t necessarily bad but if you’re a veteran who has watched a lot of isekai you’re not gonna be thrilled by it.
21. RWBY: Ice Queendom
Since ancient times, the world of Remnant has been constantly threatened by the Grimm: nightmare creatures obsessed with annihilating both humans and the half-human Faunus. To protect themselves, the world’s four kingdoms established academies that train young people to be huntsmen: warriors tasked with destroying Grimm.
Ruby Rose, a cheerful 15-year-old from the kingdom of Vale, has always wished to attend the prestigious Beacon Academy. She can only watch as her elder sister, Yang Xiao Long, leaves for the academy alone because she is too young. But everything changes when Ruby fights off a gang of armed robbers and the news reaches Beacon’s headmaster, Professor Ozpin.
RWBY: Ice Queendom has some amazing action and fight scenes, unlike the original ruby. I also love the character design and voiceovers, the story can feel a little rushed and hard to follow but overall it’s pretty decent.
20. Vermeil in Gold
Alto summons a powerful demon named Vermeil with the help of a mysterious grimoire in order to pass his summoning magic class, and she is more than willing to serve as his familiar. Vermeil needs to get physical with Alto in order to increase his power. Yes, that kind of “physical.”
To put it mildly, vermeil in gold is an acquired taste. The animation in the episodes is occasionally disappointing, with fight scenes consistently falling flat despite some cool moments. Someone’s appreciation for Vermeil in Gold’s fan service will most likely determine whether they stick around past the first few episodes; if they do, they will be treated to an above-average supernatural anime that is willing to take its characters in unexpected directions.
19. Harem in the Labyrinth of Another World
Michio Kaga, a high school student, attempts to launch a strange online game he discovered while browsing the internet one day. Instead, he is transported to a rural village in the game’s world, where he is given special abilities and a powerful sword. After gathering his thoughts, he finds himself fighting bandits and quickly realizes that he cannot log out. Michio, resigning himself to fate and accepting this reality, embarks on a journey to enjoy his new life, conquer dungeons for money, and build a harem to satisfy all his manly desires.
For those of you who didn’t already know, this anime is basically borderline hentai so, you should find an empty room before you start watching it.
18. A Couple of Cuckoos
16-year-old ace student Nagi Umino, a second-year high school student at Meguro River Academy, was switched at birth. On his way to meet his birth parents, he meets the brash, outspoken Erika Amano, who is determined to make Nagi her fake boyfriend because she never wants to marry. When Nagi arrives at dinner, he discovers that his parents have resolved the hospital switch by having him marry the daughter his birth parents raised…who happens to be none other than Erika herself!
I’m gonna be honest with you guys on this one, I dropped this anime after a couple of episodes and before the anime was released I had read about 70 or so chapters of the manga and yes I dropped that too.
A Couple of Cuckoos is not my cup of tea but if you’re into some good old harem drama then you should at the very least try this out for yourself.
17. When Will Ayumu Make His Move?
Yaotome is the cute president of her high school’s shogi (Japanese chess) club, and she’s pretty sure her underclassman Ayumu, the only other member, has a huge crush on her. Every day after school, they play shogi, but no matter what she does, she can’t seem to coax or trick him into confessing his feelings! What she doesn’t realize is that Ayumu has made a promise to himself to reveal his feelings after he has defeated Yaotome at shogi for the first time. However, there is one major flaw in this strategy: he stinks!
When Will Ayumu Make His Move? has a wholesome and goofy plot and it is pretty similar to Kaguya-sama. So, if you liked Kaguya-sama, go watch this anime.
16. Engage Kiss
Engage Kiss takes place in a metropolis where organizations bid to take on missions that typically involve demons. The young Shuu Ogata runs one such business, and he is supported by Kisara, a demon who lends her power in exchange for the protagonist’s memories. He is also frequently assisted by Ayano Yuuigiri, an agent who works for a Private Military Company that used to employ Shuu.
The gorgeous animation and good waifus manage to make up for the mediocre plot. If you’re looking for something decent with good action and characters then you should definitely watch it!
15. Rent-A-Girlfriend Season 2
Rent-A-Girlfriend Season 2 is both D-tier and S-tier at the same time. It’s basically a trash can made of solid gold. ~ Echidnut
The series revolves around Kazuya Kinoshita, a 20-year-old college student, who has a wonderful girlfriend: the bright and sunny Mami Nanami. But suddenly, he doesn’t. To soothe the pain in his heart, he hires a rental girlfriend through an online app. Chizuru Mizuhara, his partner, wins Kazuya’s affection with her unparalleled beauty and cute demeanor.
Turn your brain off before watching this anime and you might just enjoy watching it.
14. Dropkick on My Devil!!! X (Season 3)
The slapstick-heavy comedy anime revolves around the tumultuous relationship between the gothic human Yurine Hanazono and the demon Jashin-chan. Essentially, the latter spends the majority of her time attempting to murder the former, and in response, Yurine tortures Jashin in some rather brutal ways.
Dropkick On My Devil!! X got off to a predictable but enjoyable start, full of meta jokes and pain. The season’s episodes feature the majority of the anime’s supporting characters, which can be overwhelming; however, figures such as Pekora and Minos help to diversify Yurine and Jashin’s routine.
13. My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex
Mizuto and Yume are a former couple who had a relationship in junior high school but became increasingly irritated with each other and used their graduation to break up. But on the day before they start high school, the two reunite in the most unexpected way: their parents announce their marriage, and Mizuto and Yume become step-siblings. To prioritize their parents’ relationship, the two promise not to play with each other, establishing a rule in which “whoever crosses the boundaries of siblinghood norms” loses, and the winner will not only be called the older sibling but also get to make a request.
Unlike its name, My Stepmom’s Daughter is My Ex is actually a pretty wholesome anime and the characters are surprisingly almost too mature for the premise. If you like rom coms you should definitely try this out!
12. The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting
The vicious Tooru Kirishima is assigned the task of babysitting his boss’ daughter, Yaeka Sakuragi. Even though he appears to be an unsuitable candidate for the job at first glance, Tooru’s confidence and relaxed demeanor complement Yaeka’s.
The Yakuza’s Guide To Babysitting skips over the “they don’t get along” part to get right to the heart of this premise. While Tooru and Yaeka’s relationship is rarely hilarious, it is always endearing. The anime also does not shy away entirely from the darker side of Yakuza life, as Tooru occasionally threatens to kill someone.
The Yakuza’s Guide To Babysitting is pretty similar to Spy x Family so if you enjoyed that then you’ll probably enjoy this too.
11. Classroom of the Elite
Season 2 of Classroom of the Elite begins immediately following the events of the Cruise Ship Special Test arc, with the first-year classes being given a new test. This new test ups the ante by combining students from various classes, forcing “enemies” to collaborate while pursuing points for themselves.
The anime rushed through the sports festival, not allowing any plot point to breathe. Thankfully, the subsequent episode got things back on track, even rehabilitating Suzune by giving her a role in saving Class-sports D’s festival. The chapter ended with a heated exchange between Suzune, Ryuen, and Kikyo, which solidified the latter’s entertaining awfulness.
Classroom of the Elite has a solid premise, a badass protagonist, and a lot of really interesting side characters. But, what it also has, is an anime adaptation. Seriously just read the light novel, it’s way better than the anime.
10. The Devil is a Part-Timer! Season 2
The Devil works part-time! Season 2 has had some brilliant moments, but it has struggled to match the magic of its predecessor. Season 2 has almost entirely ignored Maou’s work life at MgRonald’s, which was previously the anime’s selling point. And for some reason, it feels as if the animation of the first season is better than season 2. The uneven animation might be more forgivable if the storytelling and humor were particularly strong, but neither has been good enough to make up the difference. Overall, If season 1 of The Devil is a Part-Timer! was a 10 then season 2 is a mere 7 at best.
9. Parallel World Pharmacy
Kanji is a pharmacist who reincarnates as a child in a medical family. As Falma, Kanji seeks to make a difference in the world through healing rather than force. Despite being overpowered with the ability to essentially create any substance he desires, Falma must still rely on his medical background to help people, and the scientific component of Parallel World Pharmacy appears to be well researched. The anime is about to get into the meat of its premise, as episode 4 ended with Falma opening his pharmacy.
Parallel World Pharmacy is a bit different and unique than the average isekai anime being released lately. Instead of an overpowered and dense adventurer who obliterates his enemies, Parallel World Pharmacy, as its name suggests, focuses on the life of a reincarnated pharmacist!
8. Overlord Season 4
Summer 2022 is jam-packed with anime sequels, and Overlord is one of the season’s most critically acclaimed returning anime. With the Nation of Darkness in place, Ainz is attempting to build a relationship based on something resembling trust with a kingdom full of humans who are terrified of their new ruler.
Overlord 4 has lived up to its potential, especially since the first few episodes appear to be laying the groundwork for Nazarick’s Floor Guardians to play a more active role. While Ainz is powerful enough to subjugate any foe in his path, seeing the protagonist approach his quest for expansion, with a more diplomatic mindset, has been refreshing. We even see Ainz attempting to build a relationship with the dwarf kingdom, which could lead to the protagonist facing a dragon.
7. Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 4
Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon? 4 follows on from season 3’s action-packed finale. It begins by immediately establishing an enticing premise for its next arc: Bell must reach the lower levels of the Dungeon. Season 4’s return to exploration is much appreciated, as the previous arcs were mostly set within Orario rather than the unexplored layers hidden beneath the city.
This season’s directness has been its greatest asset. Because of the introduction of an improved Moss Huge monster, the exploration team is primarily concerned with ensuring their own survival, which has resulted in a slew of intense sequences.
6. Shadows House Season 2
Continuing from the first season, the shadow Kate and her living doll Emilico are still attempting to discover the dark secrets of the Shadows House, a gothic mansion with an unusual social rank system.
Despite the fact that the first season began as a slice of life, Shadows House eventually revealed itself to be a mystery thriller, especially once the first arc began. Season 2 delves deeper into the house’s mythos and social system, particularly Star Bearers and their role in keeping the children in line. The anime is also delving into the powers of the shadows, while Kate and Emilico try to strengthen their bonds with the few people they can trust.
5. Call of the Night
Call of the Night, arguably the most anticipated new anime of Summer 2022, tells a unique love story about a disenfranchised teenage boy, Kou Yamori, who suffers from insomnia and ventures out during the night. During this walk, he meets an enigmatic woman named Nazuna, who ignites a spark in him. She also bites his neck and suck his blood, revealing herself to be a vampire. Unexpectedly, Kou declares his desire to become a creature of the night, a process that necessitates his falling in love with Nazuna.
4. Uncle from Another World
While Uncle from Another World is another isekai, the anime is anything but generic. It’s also one of the best comedy anime this season.
The Protagonist (Uncle) returns to Earth after spending 17 years in a fantasy world and moves in with his nephew, Takafumi. The MC tries to adjust to modern life while reminiscing on an adventure that produced more bad times than good, using his cultivated magical powers to create reasonably successful YouTube videos and to provide snapshot looks into his days as an isekai hero. Uncle from Another World excels at both fantasy and reality scenes, combining the two in a way that enhances both.
3. Lycoris Recoil
Lycoris Recoil, an original anime, started strong and has only gotten better since then. Set in a familiar but slightly futuristic world, Tokyo’s peace is maintained by an organisation that hides operatives known as Lycoris within general society in order to prevent crimes from occurring. These agents disguise themselves as high school girls in order to blend in.
Takina is kicked out of the group’s main hub and sent to one of its associates, a café called LycoReco, to work on her teamwork. There, she meets Chisato, a talented and carefree agent who demonstrates to her new partner that she does not have to follow the standard Lycoris method in order to become everything she is capable of becoming. Takina and Chisato work well together, with the latter assisting the former in breaking out of her shell. The action sequences in Lycoris Recoil are excellent, not only in terms of animation but also in terms of how they develop the characters’ personalities.
2. Made in Abyss Season 2
The Golden City of the Scorching Sun begins by torturing a new child character, Vuelo Eluko – Made in Abyss returns, darker than ever. Reg, Riko, and Nanachi are now in the sixth layer, steadily making their way to the eponymous city, a surreal land that can go from picturesque to horrifying in the blink of an eye. The anime intercuts the trio’s tense adventure with flashbacks or voice-overs from a previous group’s expedition to the Golden City, emphasizing that this is a one-way trip.
The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, like the previous installments of Made in Abyss, is an unsettling but captivating watch. Each step appears to be the last for the anime’s lovable but vulnerable protagonists, and it’s a feeling that few stories can create and sustain.
1. Summer Time Rendering
Shinpei Ajiro had been living with the Kofune family and their two daughters, Mio and Ushio, since his parents’ deaths. Despite leaving his home island to further his education in Tokyo, Shinpei returns after Ushio tragically drowns while attempting to save a young girl. His best friend informs him about bruises discovered around Ushio’s neck during the funeral, casting doubt on the cause of her death.
Shinpei reevaluates recent events after suspecting a murder, but strange incidents continue to occur. Disappearing people and other unexplainable occurrences prompt Mio to recall an old folktale about entities known as “Shadows,” which may or may not be entirely fictitious. An encounter with one’s Shadow, it is said, foretells one’s demise.
Summer Time Rendering is a supernatural mystery anime that started airing in Spring 2022 with a really solid premise and amazing characters. It’s basically Re:Zero combined with Among Us and it is by far my favorite anime this year. I’d highly recommend each and every one of you to give it a watch ’cause it’s actually freaking amazing!
