An anime adaptation of Rocket Shoukai’s light novel series Sentenced to Be a Hero: The Prison Records of Penal Hero Unit 9004 has been announced. The project was announced on July 16, 2023, during the Dengeki Bunko 30th anniversary livestream event.
On the production team’s Twitter account, a 37-second announcement video and commemorative visual were also released. Many of the main characters from the light novels are featured in the video.
It has not been announced whether the adaptation will be a TV show or a film. Furthermore, the voice cast, production team, and animation studio have not been revealed.
Rocket Shoukai wrote and Mephisto illustrated the dark fantasy light novel series. On October 28, 2020, it was released as a webnovel on Kadokawa’s Kakuyomu website. The light novels were then published by Kadokawa on September 17, 2021, with four volumes following in December 2022.
A manga adaptation by Natsumi Inoue was launched on Dengeki Comic Regulus on March 25, 2022. A single tankoubon volume was released in December 2022.
The light novels are published in English by Yen Press under the Yen On imprint, with the original title Sentenced to Brave Punishment. The synopsis is described as follows:
Heroism — a punishment for only the worst criminals. Those sentenced to the fate of a hero are forced to fight at the front lines against the demon king’s army—and if they die, they can expect to be revived and continue the battle. But when their leader, convicted of killing a goddess, meets another goddess himself, the contract they forge may be enough to change the world…
