The release of the Sword Art Online -Progressive- Scherzo of Deep Night movie has been delayed, with the anime’s website citing production delays caused by Covid’s “nationwide spread” as the reason. It was supposed to be released in Japan on September 10th.
The completion screening of Sword Art Online -Progressive- Scherzo of Deep Night on August 24 and the soundtrack’s release on September 9 have also been pushed back. The film’s new release date has yet to be determined.
Sword Art Online -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night, its prequel, premiered in the country on October 30, 2021.
The films are based on the Sword Art Online Progressive spin-off light novel series, which expands on the original and still ongoing Sword Art Online series’ “Aincrad arc.” The story in Sword Art Online Progressive’s fourth volume is titled Scherzo of Deep Night.
Ayako Kounou returns as director, Kento Toya as character designer and chief animation director, Yasuyuki Kai as action director and monster designer, Aya Akizuki and Keisuke Watanabe as sub-character designers, and Yuki Kajiura as music composer from Aria of a Starless Night. The animation production company is A-1 Pictures.
Meanwhile, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka plays Kirito, Haruka Tomatsu plays Asuna, Shiori Izawa plays Argo, Inori Minase plays Mito, and Yuusuke Kobayashi plays Morte.
The first volume of the Sword Art Online Progressive light novels was released in 2012, a few years after the first volume of Sword Art Online in 2009, and the eighth and most recent volume was released in June 2021. The books are published by Kadokawa under the Dengeki Bunko imprint. Reki Kawahara wrote the main novel and abec illustrated the Progressive Sword Art Online light novels.
Since 2014, the Sword Art Online Progressive light novels have been adapted into manga. Instead of being adapted as a single, long series, the light novels are divided into separate manga series by different artists, with Himura Kiseki’s Sword Art Online Progressive being the first. The others are Shiomi Miyoshi’s Sword Art Online: Progressive – Barcarolle of Froth, Puyocha’s Sword Art Online Progressive: Canon of the Golden Rule, and Mugetsu’s Sword Art Online Progressive: Canon of the Golden Rule. The second tankoubon volume of Canon of the Golden Rule will be released on August 26.
Yen Press describes the volume as:
It’s been just two months since they were trapped in the game of death that is Sword Art Online, and Kirito and Asuna continue their struggle at the vanguard of progress through the game. The fifth floor of Aincrad is a mazelike ruin, and the two dare to take pleasure in raiding it for the treasure it contains. Upon returning to the fourth floor, it’s time to do some questing on behalf of the Elf Lord Yofilis–but here begins Asuna’s discontent, for in doing so they will have to face her least favorite monster ever…
